The most obvious and common sign of an infected tooth is a prolonged, painful toothache that lasts at 1-2 days or longer. Pain in your tooth is a sure sign that something is wrong, so you should get help from Kite & Key Dentistry® right away.
There are a few other signs you can look out for, as well. Infected teeth are often very sensitive to hot and cold food and drinks, and may also be tender when you chew or bite. Your tooth might feel painful or sensitive when you eat very sugary foods.
Infected teeth can also cause inflammation and discoloration of the gum tissue around the affected tooth. In severe cases, they also may cause facial swelling or a fever. If you notice one or more of these symptoms, it’s very likely that you have an infected tooth. Contact us right away for an emergency appointment, and get the help you need.
With Dr. Julia's expertise and skill, the process of root canal therapy is simple and straightforward. Dr. Julia will begin by cleaning and numbing your mouth. Keep in mind, you always have the option of being sedated as well. Once your mouth is numb, Dr. Julia will use a dental drill to gently remove any decayed or damaged enamel from your tooth, and to create a small opening in the tooth structure.
Through this opening, Dr. Julia will remove infected tooth pulp. Once all of the infected material has been removed, the interior of the tooth will be sanitized and filled with a rubber-like material called “gutta-percha,” which replaces the pulp and strengthens the inside of the tooth. After this, the tooth will be restored with a filling or a dental crown, depending on your case.
Your tooth will not require any special treatment, and there is no long healing process after root canal therapy. Your tooth may feel a little bit tender or sensitive for a few days, but you should experience no pain or discomfort.
If you do notice serious pain that lasts 1 week or longer, you’ll need to come back for a follow-up appointment. This is not normal, and indicates that the infection may still be present in your tooth.
We offer laughing gas sedation to keep all of our patients feeling safe and comfortable at the dentist. With laughing gas, you won’t feel any pain or discomfort during your root canal, and you can fight back against feelings of fear and anxiety. To find out if this method of sedation is right for you, contact us for an appointment with Dr. Julia.
