Dental fillings are the best way to restore cavities and prevent further complications, like tooth infections. If you suspect you have a cavity, get help right away from Dr. Julia Winter. If you are located in Ridley Park or Folsom, contact us for an appointment now.
Fillings are required to restore your smile if you have a cavity. How do you know if you have a cavity? Toothaches are a common sign of very deep cavities that are at risk of becoming infected.
Even if you don’t have a toothache, you may notice that your tooth feels very sensitive to heat and cold, or even to the pressure of chewing or biting. Deep cavities also often feel tender when you consume very sugary foods or drinks.
If you have a hand mirror, you can even look at your tooth and perform a visual inspection. Look for any black or brown staining, or visible pits or holes in your tooth. If you notice any of the above symptoms, make sure to come to Kite & Key Dentistry® for an appointment with Dr. Julia to get the help you need.
Dr. Julia will begin by cleaning and numbing your mouth. Then, you can be sedated with nitrous oxide, if desired. Once your mouth is numb, she will gently use a dental drill to remove any damaged or decayed enamel from your tooth, and to prepare it for your filling.
We use both composite and metal-amalgam fillings. After your tooth has been trimmed, Dr. Julia will apply the filling material to your tooth, and adjust it until the natural shape and function of your tooth has been restored. Once the overall shape is right, she will check your bite, then trim and refine the filling until it fits perfectly into your mouth. When everything looks good, your filling will be polished and cleaned, and then the process is complete.
There is no extensive recovery or healing process after getting a filling. Your tooth may feel tender for a few days, but you don’t have to take any special tips to recover after treatment.
However, we do recommend contacting Dr. Julia if your filling feels very sensitive 2-4 weeks after treatment, or if you experience any pain or discomfort. Prolonged sensitivity and pain are not normal, so you’ll need to see us for a follow-up if you notice these issues.
At Kite & Key Dentistry®, we want you to feel safe and comfortable during your treatment. That’s why we offer sedation for all of our patients. With nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation, you can rest and relax during your appointment, and get the help you need with no pain, fear, or anxiety. Contact us now to learn more and find out if sedation is right for you.
